Apple WWDC 2026: Key Highlights

Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 was held on June 8 at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. It's the time of year when Apple reveals new capabilities in its software for its iPhones, iPads, Macs and other devices to the world. This event is always talked about and this year things are changing fast.

Tim Cook Steps Down From CEO’s Post

This year's WWDC marked CEO Tim Cook's last with the company, as he is handing things off to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus on September 1.

Cook's keynote ended with an extended Q&A with the audience. He has been the CEO of Apple since 2011, after taking over from Steve Jobs. It was under his guidance that Apple became one of the most valued companies in the world. He is now shifting to a new role.

Siri Gets a Complete Makeover

For years, Siri which is Apple's own voice assistant has trailed quite behind its competitors like Google Assistant and ChatGPT. Finally, Apple addressed it head-on at WWDC 2026.

The new Siri is powered by Google Gemini and is said to be more capable, conversational, and support visual intelligence, compared to the previous version. It will also be part of a stand alone app, as well as work through apps.

To put it in perspective, the earlier version of Siri could set a timer, or play a song. The new Siri AI can converse entirely with you, comprehend your screen, and perform operations across several applications simultaneously.

Apple's key promise was privacy. Apple’s Senior Vice President Craig Federighi mentions: "We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable". The data is only used to complete your request, and outside experts can verify this promise.

Apple Intelligence: AI Everywhere on Your Device

The company revealed a variety of new Apple Intelligence updates throughout its various apps, such as tab management for Safari, all-in-one password updates, and cross-app context awareness. The Phone app will now be able to download and ask information from other applications, such as Mail and Messages while making a live call, as well as Messages adding AI-powered suggestions to reply to texts.

Apple states it has worked with Google and the Gemini family of models to create the next-generation of Apple Foundation Models to provide these integrated Apple Intelligence experiences.

iOS 27 to Support iPhone 11 and Above

Meanwhile, Apple said that all devices from the iPhone 11 onward will be eligible for iOS 27 and the company claims, it will be "available to more users than any iOS release ever.” Now the photos arrive 70 percent quicker, AirDrop transfers are 80 percent faster, and multitasking will become more seamless.

The iPhone 11 was released in 2019. This will ensure that even a seven-year-old phone gets access to Apple's newest software and shows a strong step towards Digital inclusion.

Search Gets Rebuilt From the Ground Up

A dedicated session on search was held at WWDC. Stacey Ford, Vice President of OS Program Management stated: “We’ve all had that moment where you search for something you know is there, but it just won’t show up.”

“So on iOS, iPadOS and macOS, we’ve rebuilt the foundation of search that powers Spotlight, Photos, and Mail,” she adds.

This is no small update. On the other end of the spectrum, rebuilding search at the foundation level means quick, smart and accurate searching throughout the Apple ecosystem.

Photos App Gets Powerful AI Editing Tools

Apple has three new AI features for Photos. There is a new "Reframe" feature to edit the view of an image as if the camera had been moved during the original shot.

The "Extend" tool can be used to make images stretch or increase their aspect ratio, or to add more to a scene.

The existing function “Cleanup” also will be upgraded by eliminating the distractions with better quality and more realistic results with the use of generative AI.

macOS Golden Gate: The New Mac Software

It has been confirmed that the name of macOS 27 will be macOS Golden Gate. Like iOS 27, it integrates AI capabilities, such as Siri, extensively into the Mac experience, introduces new features like Visual Intelligence for asking questions about anything displayed on the screen, and includes performance improvements witnessed throughout Apple's different platforms.

Customisation in Liquid Glass Design

A year ago, Apple unveiled a new visual style known as Liquid Glass which is a visually translucent, glass-like appearance for its application and icons. It didn't go down well with everyone. Apple will not launch an entirely new look, but now users will be able to tone down some of elements or emphasize them more.

New Parental Controls

Apple announced a set of tools for parents to control what their kids can and can't do with their apple devices. Parents can determine who their child can call, which apps and websites they are allowed to access, and Apple has some recommendations on how to change restrictions. The "Ask to Browse" feature limiting website access and "Ask to Buy" for App Store purchases will be set as defaults for devices set up for children younger than 13.

WWDC 2026 has been Apple's most AI-centric keynote ever. AI editing capabilities in Photos, a revamped search algorithm and stricter parental settings, Apple revealed that its artificial intelligence is no longer a concept for the future, but rather inside every application on your phone.

The event was also one to mark the end of a period in tech history as the CEO of Apple for 15 years, Tim Cook, announced that he is stepping down from his role.
