Tournament Format: What is New in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup uses a brand-new format. The field has grown from 32 teams (used since 1998) to 48 teams. This means the tournament has more groups, more matches, and a new knockout round called the Round of 32.

How do teams qualify from groups?

Each group has 4 teams. The top 2 teams from each group go through automatically. 

Additionally, the 8 best third-placed teams from all 12 groups also advance. So a total of 32 teams move to the knockout stage.
