12 Key Achievements under PM Narendra Modi
Here are 12 key achievements that define the governance under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi.
1. India Became the World's Fourth-Largest Economy in 2025
In May 2014, India was ranked 11th globally in terms of nominal GDP and within 2025, it had surpassed Japan to become the 4th largest economy in the world with a nominal GDP of $4.15 billion. As of April 2026, India slipped to 6th largest economy due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, that impacted crude oil prices and rising price of semiconductors which has disrupted the world market and directly impacted India.
Despite this India is considered to be the one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is expected to grow at 6.5% as per the IMF World Economic Outlook report.
2. PM Jan Dhan Yojana
PMJDY or Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is considered as the largest financial inclusion programs in the world which was started to bring banking to every Indian. As of 2026, approximately 58.15 crore bank accounts have opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana scheme with total deposits exceeding 3 lakh crores.
According to a release by the Ministry of Finance, 56% of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana beneficiaries are women, and 67% of people are from rural and semi-urban areas.
3. Unified Payment Interface (UPI)
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was launched in April 2016 and has since grown into the backbone of India's digital economy. From just 2 crore transactions in FY 2016-17, UPI processed over 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26, a nearly 12,000-fold increase in volume, according to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It is the largest real time payment system in the world accounting for about 49% of all the real time payments in the world.
Approximately transactions worth Rs 314 lakh crore are processed annually with UPI. In August 2025, it crossed 20 billion monthly transactions for the first time.
The platform is live in 8 countries outside India, including Singapore, the UAE, France, and Bhutan. The RBI has noted that UPI accounts for 85.5 percent of digital transactions by volume in India.
4. Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana
Launched in September 2018, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is considered to be the world's largest publicly funded health insurance scheme.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides a health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisations. It covers 40% of the economically weaker section of India's population.
As per the Economic Survey of 2025-26, 44 crore Ayushman Bharat cards have been issued, and over 1.8 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are operational across the country.
5. Top 3 in Renewable Energy in the World
The installed solar capacity of India in 2014 was 3 GW, and as of March 31, 2026, the cumulative solar capacity reached 150 GW. According to ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the total non-fossil fuel installed capacity reached 283.64 GW in March 2026.
India ranks 3rd in the world in renewable energy installed capacity, only behind China and United States.
6. Chandrayaan-3 and Landing on the South Pole of Moon
India made its way to record books on August 23, 2023 when Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander touched down the south pole of the moon catapulting India to become only the 4th nation in the world to achieve a soft landing on the moon and the only country to reach the polar region of the moon ever.
7. Infrastructure Development
Infrastructure is one of the hallmarks of the Modi government. In 2014, there were 91,287 km of national highways, which has increased to 1,46,145 km in 2026, thereby increasing connectivity. Similarly from 74 airports in 2014 to 157 in 2026, it is a big leap in connecting smaller towns and cities to the metropolitan areas.
The power sector also witnessed record capacity addition in India. India has recorded a record 52,537 MW of generation capacity addition in FY 2025-26 from all sources.
According to data from IBEF, the Northeast has seen the highest ever investment in rail infrastructure, with Rs 77,000 crore invested by the railways in the region alone.
8. Jal Jeevan Mission
Only 17% households had access to piped drinking water before 2019. With the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission in August 2019, there has been considerable improvement with around 15.7 crore tap water connections provided to rural households in 2026.
9. Swachh Bharat Mission
Swachh Bharat Mission, was launched in 2nd October 2014 with a focus on following the best sanitation practices in India by building toilets in rural areas. As a part of the campaign over 10 crore toilets were built in rural areas.
This campaign combined infrastructure along with community awareness which resulted in measurable improvements in public health indicators. This initiative was also acknowledged by international level organisations such as WHO and UNICEF.
10. PM Awas Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aimed at providing permanent houses to low income and economically weaker families. Till 2026, 4 crore houses have been built under this scheme. The coverage included both rural and urban areas.
11. Rise in Defence Exports
India was mostly importing defence items till 2013-14. However Modi invested in the Make in India initiative to establish self sufficiency in defence sector and increase domestic production. It resulted in record exports of 23,622 crores in 2025-26.
The brief conflict between India and Pakistan under the Operation Sindoor, demonstrated India’s technology and capability which led to increase in weapon exports.
12. Abrogation of Article 370
Modi government abolished the Article 370, thereby ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status which differentiated it from the legal rules followed by other states in India. The state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories, namely Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and Union territory of Ladakh.
