The dramatic photo of night lights of India was taken through the international space station (ISS) on March 11, 2026, and this photo indicates urbanization and raises concerns regarding its sustainability.
The image has become viral being a rare flyover image of the country and the glory of the nation along the Arabian Sea to the Himalayas.
The ISS posted a breathtaking panoramic view of clouds and lights in India at night, with sparkling cities such as Mumbai and Delhi in the black expanses.
The official account of the Space Station posted it on X and it immediately gained millions of views and comments in praise of the heartbeat of Earth. This incident highlights the fact that India is fast urbanizing, which can be seen 400km up, a combination of both wonders and revelations.

What Did the Image Show?
The image shows the western coast of India as illuminated, and the shores of Mumbai are filled with lights and the sprawl of Delhi goes through the skies of the North. The lines of Faint Himalayan accentuate contrast, and ISS solar panels frame the picture, accentuating the privileged position of the station.
Published by NASA and popular in the Indian press, it raises national pride, in the same direction as Rakesh Sharma in 1984, but much more optimistic today.
How did ISS Manage to Capture this Image?
The ISS can travel with a speed of 28,000 km/h and it has 16 orbits around every day which allows it to fly around once in every 90 minutes. High-resolution Nikon cameras were used by astronauts to capture multi-shot panoramas which were sewed together using software to create a smooth nighttime view.
The time was programmed to match with the night side of India at around 10 PM IST, when the urban lights are at their best with no interference from the moonlight.
Urban Growth Indicator
Night lights are viewed as indicators of economic development, and recent data provided by NASA in Black Marble revealed more areas in India to be lit in the last 4 years since 2012. Cities such as Delhi grew 40 percent in brilliance, population growth and infrastructure.
| City | 2012 Light Intensity (relative) | 2026 Estimate | % Growth |
| Mumbai | 100 | 165 | 65% |
| Delhi | 85 | 140 | 65% |
| Bengaluru | 60 | 110 | 83% |
| Hyderabad | 45 | 90 | 100% |
Challenges: Light Pollution
The improving light pollution in India is an indicator of the improvement in the skies, which goes up by 7-10 percent per year, which is highest in Delhi and Mumbai, owing to LED streetlights.
How Does it Impact India?
The ISS, which is a joint wonder with the India Gaganyan efforts, assists in Earth-observation through 3 million and above images annually. Visits by astronaut, Shubhanshu Shukla, are reminiscent of Sharma, as NISAR satellites now survey similar areas.
Glow lights highlight the urbanization process all over the world, yet the rate of India is higher than others. The response of the people: "India emerging, literally! trended on X.
Future Implications
Such sustainable practices as dimmable LEDs and dark sky reserves can reduce waste without the need to destroy views. Since India is already targeted at having 1 billion urbanites by 2050, it is important to balance the glowing versus green technology. The snapshots of space are thought-provoking: our lights are the links between us and space. NASA has some interactive maps, and it has been called the Black Marble.
